Unidentified policemen burned two dogs alive during a Bogota operation to evict homeless people.
The incident occurred Tuesday night in the southern neighborhood of San Cristobal, according to local media.
The witnesses said police used gasoline to burn a makeshift shelter in an abandoned building where the dogs and their owner were living.
Amid community outrage, San Cristobal Police Commander Jose David Garzon said the incident would be investigated.
Bogota’s Mayor Gustavo Petro called for further investigation into the facts surrounding the case and promised that “the members of the police who burned animals in Bogota will be dismissed.”
The alleged case of animal cruelty caused outrage among animal rights activists who called for a protest against ongoing animal abuse by Colombian police.
