Miss Maja beauty pageant winner announced amid controversy

Miss Maja Colombia 2012-2013 was crowned, reported newspaper El Heraldo on Tuesday.

Mayra Daniela Vitoviz Medina was crowned Miss Maja Colombia 2012-2013 in the western city of Corozal by a panel of judges which included Miss Haiti, Sarodj Bertin and former Miss Maja Miriam Ignacio Olivero.

Votoviz Medina was the representative for the department of Cauca, a town on the southwest border of Colombia.

The runner-up was Maria Alejandra Gomez Verbel. Gomez was the representative for Sucre, a town on the northern border of Colombia.

The event’s organizer, Antonia Vergara Olmos came under fire for reportedly failing to pay one of the pageant’s musical performers, vallenato singer Silvestre Dangond. When the popular singer left his hotel without performing, ticket-holders started throwing bottles and chairs in the city center. 70 police officers were brought in to restore calm, according to the department of Sucre’s police commander Colonel Orlando Polo Obispo.
