Landslide kills family in Risaralda

A landslide caused by heavy rains in Colombia’s coffee region killed a family of four, local media reported on Sunday.

The tragedy occurred Saturday just outside the town of Quinchia in the Risaralda department.

According to local newspaper La Tarde, the four are the first deadly victims of this year’s rainy season in the department. The national death toll of this year’s extended rainy season is 128.

Colombian President Juan Manuel Santos on Saturday called on the international community to help Colombia deal with the excessive rains that have affected more than 1.2 million so far and are expected to fall until 2011.
