Fresh attacks on a Trans-Andean oil pipeline have occurred in the southwest Colombian department of Nariño, RCN Radio reported Monday.
Authorities are yet to confirm who is responsible for the attack.
The pipeline, which runs through an indigenous community, was torn open by explosive charges. As a result, oil has begun leaking into the area, damaging the local ecology, and threatening the indigenous people’s water supply.
Local volunteer firefighters from the city of Ipales have been unable to combat the flames for fear of a minefield placed at the explosion site.
This attack is one of many to have occurred against pipelines in southern Colombia, the most recent attributed to the FARC in August last year.
No fatalities have been reported.
