Army apologizes for child murders

Colombian army commanders met Friday with the family of three children from the Arauca department who were allegedly murdered by a soldier, and issued an apology.

Two generals spoke with the father of the murdered children, Alvaro Torres, in a private meeting.

Torres demanded that those responsible for the death of his children be punished and requested security for himself and his family.

On Thursday, President Juan Manuel Santos condemned the killings.

“May the weight of the law, all the weight of the law, fall over those misfits, those satyrs, those cowards who were capable of attacking our children”, the president said, reported newspaper Semana.

“The sanction of these inhumane acts are not only demanded by the victims and Colombian society, but also by the army because by punishing the offenders, the honor is defended as well as the good name of thousands of soldiers who fulfill their mission well and respect human rights,” Santos said.

Sergeant Raul Muñoz Linares, who has been accused in the case, arrived in prison under tight security measures Thursday.
