América de Cali are a big step closer of winning their 13th Colombian
championship after a 0-1 victory at Independiente Medellín Wednesday
night.
Medellín’s Atanasio Girardot stadium had every single seat filled with enthousiastic fans, mostly there to support the home side.
It was their team that actually dominated throughout most of the match. A goal was almost scored in the first half but a free kick that had América’s goalkeeper beaten bounced off the crossbar.
Not much changed in the second half but DIM failed to take advantage of their dominance and in fact allowed their opponents to do so.
In the 63rd minute Cortés struck past Medellín keeper Bobadilla and the ball disappeared into the left corner of the goal to give the visitors an important and mentally vital victory.
If América do what is needed to defend this lead when they host Medellín in Cali on Sunday, they will move into joint first place on the all-time ranking list of title winners.
