Almost 6,000 Colombians were killed in traffic accidents last year – many of which have been attributed to the irresponsible behavior of drivers, Radio Santa Fe radio reported Wednesday.
Throughout 2009 some 5,974 people were reported killed in traffic collisions on Colombian roads, many due to “the recklessness and irresponsibility of drivers.”
Authorities have voiced concerns about road safety during this year’s vacation period.
According to director of the National Traffic Highway Patrol, General Rodolfo Palomino, “From today begins a series of regional meetings to strengthen preventive measures during this holiday season.”
Permanent patrols will be put on roads throughout the country’s Caribbean coast, which registers the highest number of traffic accidents per year.
