‘Alfonso Cano’ Facebook page removed

A Facebook page in the name of “Alfonso Cano,” the leader of Colombian guerrilla group the FARC, was removed from the social media website a few days after media discovered the public profile.

Before being removed, “Comandante Alfonso Cano” had 432 friends and used the profile to promote pro-FARC articles by the guerrilla groups itself, several press agencies and FARC-friendly website Anncol.eu.

It is impossible to verify if the removed page was administered by the FARC itself.

“A Facebook profile can be created by anyone with Internet access. How to find out how administers it? You’re have to go through a verification process that Facebook offers, which isn’t easy and immediate,” social media expert Andrea Diaz told magazine Semana.
