Thieves in the northern Colombian city of Sincelejo made off with a valuable, if somewhat weighty, load on Wednesday when they stole over $7,000 in coins, reported website El Universal.
According to reports, six sacks of the cumbersome coins were snatched from a factory, located in the industrial sector of the city, in the early hours of Wednesday morning.
Preliminary investigations made by the national police indicate an inside job, suggesting that at least some of the perpetrators were in fact employees of the factory.
“The three guards that were there, one in the porter’s lodge, two doing rounds, will not give information on what went on, which is strange. I mean, a great quantity of coins like that is not easy to carry,” said Sergeant Hugo Javier Agudelo Sanabria.
Police have so far made no arrests in their search for the coin-rich criminals.
