7 campers missing in Tolima mountains

Six Tolima students were reported missing Wednesday after failing to return from a New Years camping trip to Nevado del Tolima, in central Colombia. Another camper has been missing in the region since December 29.

According to newspaper El Espectador, the six students began their trip on December 30 in order to spend New Years Eve in the cold, snowy mountains of Nevado del Tolima. The group was supposed to return on Sunday, but neither their families nor any relief agencies know their whereabouts.

Several relief organizations conducted an aerial search of the zone in order to locate the missing people. At least fifteen rescue workers are also sweeping the area on foot, hoping to find the missing party alive.

According to the Tolima Secretary of Health, “the conditions may be quite favorable for the (missing) hikers, given that there was a lot of sun, which could help them survive. However, it may be unfavorable if they run out of water and food.”
