$50,000 reward for information on police murderers

The Colombian government on Sunday offered a $50,000 reward for information leading to the arrest of the alleged guerrillas responsible for an attack on a police patrol that left seven policemen dead in north-eastern Colombia on election day.

The reward was announced through a press release issued by the Defense Ministry, which condemned the attack.

The ambush of the police officers happened on a highway between the towns of Tibu and Tres Bocas, in the department of Norte de Santander near the Venezuelan border, where the policemen had been traveling in a truck while on patrol.

Police and military reinforcements were sent to the area to pursue the perpetrators, who are alleged to be ELN guerrillas active in the region.

The Defense Ministry report said that the policemen were killed by explosives detonated on the side of the highway.

The Norte de Santander was a hotspot for trouble on election day, with rebel groups burning ballot boxes and attacking a communications tower.
