América hold Cali, Pereira beat Junior

by Jonathan Roorda November 27, 2008

After holding Deportivo Cali to a 2-2 draw, América de Cali are the
only leaders in Group B of the Copa Mustang II semi final stage. Junior
Barranquilla crashed to a 3-2 defeat at Deportivo Pereira.

The match at Cali’s Pascual Guerrero stadium started about 45 minutes later than planned as the pitch had been suffering from heavy rain throughout the day.

Cali took the lead through Montero on 24 minutes but Ramos levelled the score eight minutes later.

Calle then thought to have earned Cali the three points they really needed after last Saturday’s defeat by Junior, but Arango netted for 2-2 with just a minute to go in regular time.

René Higuita’s Pereira lost to América on Saturday but made up for that defeat against Junior.

Quintero put the hosts ahead in the 12th minute and although Valencia equalised ten minutes later, Quintero struck again in the 26th to restore the lead.

Medina made it 3-1 in the 52nd minute and Cortes’ goal for 3-2 in the 71st minute couldn’t change anything.

As a result, América now lead with four points from two games. Junior and Pereira have two each although the Barranquilla outfit have the better goal record. Deportivo Cali are in fourth place with just one point.
