by Adriaan Alsema December 31, 2009

Colombia news - Uribe

Readers of Colombia Reports voted President Alvaro Uribe the country’s Person of the Year. Singers Juanes and Shakira came in second and third, followed by porn star Esperanza Gomez and actress Sofia Vergara.

The President received 40.9% of the 2,869 votes, beating Colombia’s most popular singers, actresses and sportsmen with length.

Juanes, who had been in the news prominently this year for organizing a huge concert in the Cuban capital Havana, received 14.4% of the votes. Shakira, who released a new album in 2009, received 9.2% of the votes.

Surprising fourth in the election, having received 9% of the votes, is porn star Esperanza Gomez. The former playmate successfully started a porn career in the U.S. this year, which almost instantly gave her international fame.

Actress Sofia Vergara, currently featuring in the sitcom Modern Family, received 8.8% of the votes and ended 5th in the election.

Controversial opposition senator and almost-Nobel-Peace-Prize winner Piedad Cordoba received 7% of the votes, followed by Nascar driver Juan Pablo Montoya (6.1%) and golfer Camilo Villegas.

Despite repeated attempts, Uribe was not available for a reaction.
