Almost 27,000 violent deaths in Colombia in 2008

Nearly 27 thousand people died through violence in Colombia in 2008,
the country’s national institute for forensic science announced
Monday. The number represents an 4.5 percent decline compared to 2007.

Homicides were the main cause of death through violence, but also this was less than the year before. 15,250 people were murdered in Colombia in 2008. The year before, 16,318 were victim of homicide.

The second most common violent death was that through road accidents. 5,670 people died in traffic in 2008. The number of people that die in road accidents saw a rise.

Suicides took the lives of 840 persons in 2008.
