Congressman Jose Manuel Herrera, who had been awaiting trial in jail
for alleged ties to paramilitary groups since last year, was released
Thursday, newspaper El Espectador reported.
Herrera was arrested last year for alleged links to the paramilitary Central Bolivar Bloc of the AUC. At the time of his arrest, the Prosecutor General had said that there was strong evidence linking the former coalition Representative to the paramilitary group.
Herrera is now released, because after closing the investigation, the Prosecution has not found enough evidence to detain the Congressman any longer. According to the newspaper, the Prosecution does not discard the possibility Herrera will be put in jail again when the Prosecution decides to try him.
