Alleged FARC student recruiter captured in Cali, Colombia

Police captured a man suspected of recruiting university students for Colombia’s largest guerrilla group, the FARC, said local media Wednesday.

26-year-old Julian Andres Hoyas Tellez, alias “Mechas,” was arrested on suspicion of rebellion, in the south of Colombia’s third-largest city Cali.

According to police, Hoyas was the head of the FARC’s Bolivarian Student Command, and charged with recruiting students for the guerrilla movement.

Police said Hoyas had been with the FARC for six years and used his job as a waiter as cover for his guerrilla activities.
