The Colombian army captured four guerrillas thought to be responsible for the security of FARC leader Guillermo Leon Saenz, alias “Alfonso Cano,” newspaper Caracol Radio reported Friday.
The four guerrillas, thought to be part of the rearguard of the FARC Central Bloc, were captured in the middle of intense combat in the rural zone of the municipality of Santa Maria, Huila, southeast of Cali.
The army established that among those captured was Arbey Atillo Osorio, alias “Alexander” or “Macuso,” the FARC member in charge of controlling the base camp and hindering the advancement of government troops towards the camp where “Alfonso Cano” is thought to be hiding.
Two of the four guerrillas captured expressed the desire to take part in the Program of Humanitarian Affairs for the Demobilized, a government program intended to reintegrate demobilized guerrillas into society.
For the time being they are being held by the troops of Artillery Battalion #9, known as “Tenerife.”
In February, the army commander asked the Colombian people to have “patience,” saying that the capture of the FARC leader was inevitable. President Juan Manuel Santos stated that Alfonso Cano will “fall as ‘Mono Jojoy’ fell.”
