Airlines hope to leverage trucker strike

Colombia’s air transportation authority said it is ready to take a load off the truckers who are going on strike at midnight Wednesday, RCN Radio reported.

Director of Civil Aeronautics Santiago Castro Gomez said that the strike is an opportunity for the aviation sector to expand its capacity.

“We are warning [the airlines] there will be an increase in demand for air transport. The airlines are waiting to see how this will translate into increased services. We believe that this strike could lead to a better use of air cargo space,” said Castro Gomez to RCN.

The director also expressed the willingness to schedule more flights to meet demands.

Colombia’s truckers have threatened to go on strike over an increase in transportation costs.
