Greek sculptor Sophia Vari is bringing her abstract sculptures to Colombia for the first time.
Fifteen of Vari’s large sculptures will be revealed in Cartagena’s Plaza de los Coches on Sunday, and will be a visual and sensory spectacle for all of the city’s visitors for the next three months.
She will also have various sculptures on display at the Plaza de Santo Domingo, San Pedro Claver, La Proclamacion, and Estribos Alley.
“We are pleased that Cartagena is the chosen site [for Vari’s sculptures] because it is an exhibit that has already been in important global cities such as Madrid, Paris, and Athens, among others. The city’s administration has supported cultural tourism, and we believe that this decision is strengthening Cartagena’s global image,” said Irina Junieles, director of the Cartagena’s Cultural Heritage Institute.
The Greek artist has managed to reconclile the abstract with the figurative, with her combinations of shapes, volumes, and colors.
The exhibition opens on December 3 and closes February 29, 2012.
