The Catholic Church Tuesday asked Colombia’s President Alvaro Uribe not
to run for the 2010 presidential elections and wait until 2014.
“I appraise President Uribe a lot. Two periods […] are very much. He achieved great and peace in the country. But it would be better for him if he leaves when his second period ends […]”, Cardinal Pedro Rubiano, archbishop of Bogota, told newspaper El Tiempo and added that Uribe should decide about his re-election in the coming days.
Monsignor Nel Beltran, Bishop of Sincelejo (Sucre), thinks that “there is a terrible polarization and the polarization has coused great disaster in the country. We must stop thinking whether one is pro or one is con because these pros and cons can trigger violence which could become unstoppable.”
Uribe needs to get advises by many and different people to get a fuller picture of things, Monsignor Beltran believes.
The President has the right to rest and share time with his family, Bishop of Monteria Monsignor Julio Cesar Vidal said. Then he can consider whether his present in the government is good or not for democracy in the country.
