An agreement between the European Union and the Medellín mayor’s office
was sealed with the allocation of 280 thousand euros toward welfare
programs for communities in the Antioquian capital Wednesday.
The initiative marks the start of an agreement between the EU and the Colombian government to improve social conditions in the city. The EU’s donation of 140 thousand euros was matched by that of the Medellín mayor’s office.
The fundswill go toward the ‘Constructing Communities of Trust and Reconciliation’ program, which aims to reconstruct the social framework of 15 suburbs in Medellín.
The program will work closely with the municipality’s ‘Program for Peace and Reconciliation’ said Frank Pearl, Colombia’s High Commissioner of Reintegration.
Pearl explained that the program aims to “raise awareness that peace is in the hands of all, promote constructive leadership, heal past wounds and give opportunities
to local communities, who should be the ones who decide what their goals are and how to achieve them. “
