September is the peak of the whale watching season in Bahia Solano, a port on Colombia’s Pacific coast.
Whales come to this area of the Pacific between July and November to breed, and a whale watching industry has sprung up in Bahia Solano to cater to tourists who want to see them.
Angelica Valencia, manager of the Corporation Changed Mano, a sustainable community tourism initiative, said that by in this period tourism Bahia Solano, the nearby town of Nuqui, and Utria National Park can increase by 50%.
This tourist boom gives a boost for the local economy, providing business to artisans, hotel owners, and travel companies.
