87 Colombian athletes qualify for London Olympics

Antioquian gymnast Jorge Hugo Giraldo became the 87th Colombian to secure a place at the 2012 London Olympics after finishing 15th at a qualifying event.

Before Giraldo’s success 50 Colombian women, 31 men and 5 mixed teams had already booked their place on the flight to the U.K.

The athletes will represent Colombia in 17 disciplines within 13 different sports.

With six months still remaining to earn qualification, the Colombian team has already exceeded expectations over the number of athletes competing and has just a handful of sportsmen and women less than Brazil, which so far has the largest team with 105 athletes.
