5,000 people in Sucre threatened by hunger

The water level of the rivers rose one and a half meter Tuesday and flooded houses and fields in the municipality of Sucre. Authorities called an state of emergency in 32 villages, affected by the floods.Julia Mercado, mayor of the town, said that victims of the flood lack food and have been forced to build camps and wooden rafts to survive the floods.A committee of the Red Cross that visited the region says the affected population is beginning to suffer from infectious diseases and stressed the lack of food in the area.The governor of the department of Sucre, Jorge Barraza, discussed the situation with the Departmental Disaster prevention Committee and mayors of surrounding municipalities, while also launching an S.O.S to the national government to receive urgent aid.Earlier this year, heavy rains killed dozens of people and left tens of thousands of families homeless throughout Colombia.
