5 million Colombians sign anti-abortion petition: Conservatives

The Colombian Conservative Party claimed Tuesday that it has acquired 5 million signatures for a petition that urges legislators to ban abortion without exception.

The Colombian constitution currently permits abortion in cases of rape, fetal deformation, or when the health of the mother is jeopardized. The petition seeks to criminalize abortion also in these cases.

Senator Jose Dario Salazar, who has organized the petition drive, stated that “it is the expression of society for Congress to legislate on this issue.”

Salazar received help from the Catholic Church in managing the anti-abortion campaign. The text of the petition reads “life in Colombia is inviolable, and will have the same protection from conception to natural death.”

The senator expressed a similar sentiment, calling the life of an unborn child “inviolable.”
