5 killed in botched kidnapping in southwest Colombia

Two soldiers and three suspected kidnappers have died in an apparent kidnapping attempt in the southwest of Colombia, local authorities said Thursday.

The incident took place in the village of Catambuco, Nariño, where early Thursday morning a firefight broke out between suspected kidnappers and soldiers attempting to prevent an abduction.

According to Nariño’s Government Secretary — in charge of public security in the department — police are looking for three more suspects who escaped the confrontation with the armed forces alive.

Several illegal armed groups are active in the region bordering Ecuador.
