48 injured in north Colombia corralejos

Colombia news - Corralejo

At least 48 people were injured in popular bullfights, called corralejos, held in the north Colombian town of Sampues over the past week.

The corralejos are traditionally part of the town’s annual feria and consist of bystanders jumping in a bull ring to taunt the bull.

Most were injured by bulls, but others reportedly were trampled by horses or got involved in alcohol fueled brawls outside the bullring.

Corralejos are traditionally held in the first two months of the year and result in a high number of injuries and approximately 20 deaths a year.

On January 7, corralejos begin in the town of Caimito, Sucre, and on January 20, the country’s most famous corralejo, Sincelejo, will be held.
