Teacher and son missing after bridge collapse

A teacher, his 8-year-old son and two tourists are missing following a bridge collapse in northwest Colombia.

Elkin Mario Castano and a group of his pupils were crossing Rio Cauca’s Western Bridge during a school trip when it partially collapsed, and he fell into the water with his son.

Two tourists witnessing the scene jumped into the water in an attempt to rescue the father and his son, but were caught in the current.

The rest of Castano’s students were unharmed.

The authorities are currently searching for the four victims.

The accident revived the controversy about the poor state of the Western Bridge, which the local community have repeatedly complained about, newspaper El Espectador reported.
