3 killed in traffic accident in northern Colombia

Colombia’s police reported the death of three people in a traffic accident in Colombia’s northern La Guajira Department Monday evening, according to news agency RCN Radio.

Two people were also injured in the incident which reportedly occurred when a Venezuela registered truck collided with a local taxi on the road between Fonseca and Barrancas.

According to witnesses, the truck was going too fast, its driver seemingly losing control and crossing over into the wrong lane.

Authorities said the driver then fled the scene. Police were reportedly beginning an operation to find him.

The victims were trapped inside the vehicle so emergency authorities had to be called to the scene to remove them, according to newspaper El Heraldo.

The first accident reports named the taxi driver as Jorge Luis Calderon Mendoza. Subsequent reports identified the other victims as 59-year-old Mary Casseres de Cervantes, and 32-year-old Emilio Epinayu Pushaina.
