Colombian soldiers dismissed for 20 years

Colombia’s inspector general on Tuesday dismissed and disqualified three soldiers from the national army for 20 years for the killing of two civilians in 2006.

The investigation of the inspector general established that the captain and two sergeants, killed the civilians while on duty.

The incident took place on a road between the municipalities of Baranoa and Usiacuri in the northern department of Atlantico on March 22, 2006.

Because the civilians were unarmed and were not taking part in hostilities, the inspector general stated that their death was a serious breach of international humanitarian law.

According to the Prosecutor General’s Office, more than 3,500 members of Colombia’s armed forces are suspected of murdering civilians.
