2,750 candidates will run in 2010 national elections

The national organization in charge of registering Congress candidates announced that 2,750 Colombians will run for office in the upcoming elections on March 14.

948 candidates from sixteen political parties will run for the Senate, and 1,533 candidates from 282 parties will run for the House of Representatives, El Espectador reported Wednesday.

Five candidates from the indigenous community will run for the Senate and 51 will run for the House of Representatives.

The Colombian Senate is comprised of 102 senators. The House of Representatives is comprised of 166 members.

Alfonso Portela, a representative of the registry organization, said there was a significant increase in the number of candidates running for the Senate. In the last national elections in 2006, 815 candidates from 20 political parties ran for the Senate, while 1,878 candidates from 399 parties ran for a seat in the House of Representatives.

On February 9 the draw to decide each candidate’s place on the ballot will be carried out.
