1.7 million Colombians sign for life imprisonment child abusers

1.7 million Colombians signed a petition to demand a referendum about a
constitutional amendment needed to impose life imprisonment on all
convicted of the abduction, rape or murder of children.

Two trucks, decorated with a huge Christmas ribbon, deposited the petitions at the National Registry office that will have to check the validity of the signatures.

The collection of signatures for life imprisonment of child abusers was promoted by the country’s Prosecutor General, the Attorney General, some congressmen and representatives of the media.

If the petitions are considered valid, a popular referendum will be organized to force Congress to debate the constitutional change.
