168 thousand Colombians given victim status

The Justice and Peace Unit of Colombia’s Prosecutor General’s Justice
has given 168 thousand Colombians the status of victims of paramilitary
and guerrilla violence so far.

38 thousand of these victims — mostly women and children — have been heard by the Prosecutor General’s office, Caracol Radio reported Monday.

Paramilitaries have confessed 15 thousand murders, 1,020 cases of forced recruitment and 747 forced disappearances.

The Justice and Peace Unit added that its investigaters have exhumed 1,419 mass graves, found 1,752 bodies of which 231 were identified and returned to their families.

The Prosecutor General’s Justice and Peace Unit was set up as part of the demobilization process of paramilitary organization AUC.
