12% of Colombian children are malnourished: UNICEF

Twelve out of hundred children in Colombia are suffering from chronic malnutrition, UNICEF reported Wednesday.

Paul Martin, UNICEF delegate for Colombia, said that every third death of children under 5 years is related to malnutrition, which means that 5000 kids die every year for this reason, local newspapers reported.

“The problem lies not only in the lack of food, but also in the preparation”, he added.

Family Minister Elvira Forero hopes to fight against malnutrition by working “hand in hand with the agricultural sector. Brazil had good experiences with the Zero Hunger program and we expect to implement several programs here in Colombia”.
