11 people indicted for ‘false positive’ murder

The Prosecutor General’s Office has accused four soldiers and seven civilians of participation in the murder of a man in La Guajira and subsequently presenting his body as being that of a guerrilla, El Mundo reports.

Yilber de Jesus Atencio Orozco was killed on February 11, 2007, in an area known as “Las Piscinas,” in the northern Caribbean-coast department of La Guajira.

His death was initially recorded as being a result of combat with guerrilla insurgents, although this account of events was disregarded upon further investigation, which uncovered that there was no armed confrontation and he was not even a rebel fighter.

The four professional soldiers who stand accused are Angel Balcázar Ramírez, Leonardo Suárez Medina, Javier Rosado Manjarrez and Eudes Antonio Martínez Romero.

All the alleged perpetrators of the crime will remain incarcerated until the case is resolved.
