Colombian authorities arrested eleven officials working for the country’s Foreign Ministry and involved in fraudulently legalizing documents.
The suspects were charging people money to have their documents processed faster or falsify information on people’s passports.
The Foreign Ministry itself had requested the investigations in October 2007 after a colleague told authorities about the fraud schemes.
According to Foreign Minister Jaime Bermúdez, his department has “zero tolerance for corruption. We do not accept it and do not allow the slightest room for it.”
