1 of 3 suspects of American’s murder arrested, charged

Authorities in the north of Colombia have arrested and charged one of three suspects of the murder of a U.S. citizen in his home on the Caribbean coast, local newspaper El Heraldo reported Friday.

The 35-year old suspect was arrested on Thursday in the village of Juan de Acosta and subsequently charged with homicide, aggravated assault and the illegal carrying of firearms before a Barranquilla court.

Police are still looking for a man and a woman who are suspected to have planned and carried out what appears to have been a botched robbery.

The January 21 murder of 62-year old Benson Sheinkin — dubbed “Mister Benson” by his neighbors — shocked the local community who called on local authorities to up security measures in what was known to be a sleepy coastal village. Sheinkin’s wife was injured, but survived the attack.
