1 minor killed, 32 escape in mass jailbreak in Cali (VIDEO)

One minor died and 32 escaped during a jailbreak from a  juvenile detention center in Cali in the early hours of Sunday morning.

Cali police commander, General Fabio Alejandro Castañeda, explained that one of the youngsters was shot in the head as he tried to flee to the patio of a neighboring home and another boy sustained a fractured leg falling from the roof of another house. The incident is still under investigation.

The riot reportedly broke out at 3AM and one inmate stole the keys from an educator, opened the cells and allowed dozens of prisoners to escape via the backyard of the facility.

A local resident reportedly told El Pais that she heard a number of gunshots fired during the riot and that these kinds of events had become commonplace in the neighborhood.

“These events have become the norm in the area because  the boys try to flee all the time. Authorities do not do much to prevent this damage to the community,” said the resident.

Sunday’s riot was the third incident to have taken place in El Buen Pastor detention center this month and in March two inmates sustained burns when a fire was started in an attempt to escape. Both of the injured inmates died over the past week as a result of their injuries.
