Tourism to Medellin grew 12% in 2009

A recent report published by the Medellin mayor's office shows that the city's tourist industry expanded last year.

According to the mayor's office, the hotel industry reported a 12% increase in visitors compared to 2008 and hotels were filled to 51% of capacity.

The city recieved 34,787 visitors, according to DAS, over 11,000 of which came from foreign countries, including the U.S., Venezuela, Ecuador, Mexico, Peru, and Spain.

Visitors enjoyed the peaks of Nutibara, Explorer Park, the Spanish Library Park, and the Museums of Antioquia.

During the past year, the mayor's office reported that close to 900,000 people visited Medellin's museums.

Tourists to the city also participated in a survey about what could be improved in the city. Visitors hope that the city of Medellin will improve in the areas of trash clean up, traffic in the city, and general guidance and orientation to the city; but 20% of tourists reported that nothing needed to be changed.
