Bogota authorities are building a pedestrian tunnel to the 'Cerro de Monserrate', one of the city's most famous tourist attractions, to facilitate a safer ascent for hikers.
Construction has already begun on the tunnel that will extend 35 meters and be bulit from a mixture of erosion-resistant reinforced concrete.
When the footpath is expected to re-open in March 2010, visitors will be able to climb the hill safely, thanks to a system of steel and mesh anchors strengthening the sides of the slope.
The popular walkway leading up to the Bogota attraction was closed on the April 15 this year due to fears about the instability of the stone road which was posing an increasing risk of rockfall and landslide.
According to Ana Camacho, director of the District Institute for Recreation and Sport (IDRD), the project will cost an estimated 1.8 billion pesos and will be funded by the said entity.
The 'Cerro de Monserrate' is one of the legendary guardians of the city, on whose summit stands a shrine. The hill can be climbed on foot or by cable-car and boasts magnificent views over the Colombian capital as well as a restaurant and countless handicraft stalls.
