Tourists prefer Bogota to other Colombian cities

Colombia news - Bogota's candelaria

Most foreign tourists choose Bogota as their leisure trip destination, Colombian immigration authorities reported.

According to Colombian immigration statistics, 52% of the tourists who come to Colombia prefer to visit Bogota.

In the first semester of 2009, over 600.000 tourists visited the Colombian capital, 11% more than in the same period in 2008.

Elsa Muñoz, director of the city’s heritage institute, says that although there is still work to be done, Bogota’s administration has carried out specific programs to make the city more appealing to foreign tourists.

Bogota has many tourist attractions, like the colonial neighborhood of la Candelaria, and the Gold Museum.

As an Englishman who has travelled extensively in Colombia, I wonder if the figures may be misleading. I visited many places, from the beautiful southern "Alpine" town of Silvia, to the notorious Nevado del Ruiz. But my itinerary was bound to include Bogota. My point is, there is likely to be at least one visit to the capital for every trip elsewhere. It doesn't mean that the rest of the country isn't appreciated.

I too have traveled Colombia and know that there is much more to Colombia than Bogota or the coastal cities. I now live in Tunja which is the Captial of Boyaca. Tunja and Boyaca are extremely important to Colombia and South America. Puente Boyaca is where the final battle took place and independance was was for south america. Rich History can be found in many places throughout Colombia. However, I suspect that there is a greater push by the government to get visitors to Bogota with less history.

I wonder if these statistics are such on account of most tourists don't know much about Colombia aside from Cartagena and Bogotá. Selfishly, I would prefer that most Colombian cities remain uninfluenced by tourism as this is a large part of their charm. However, if everyone knew what I know, Colombia would be one of the top destinations worldwide.

As a Norwegian having spent the last 4 winters in Colombia I believe these numbers are misleading. Although I have my winter-base in Medellin, most of my travels within the country goes through Bogota.
Less corruption, no guerilla and Colombia has the possibility of becoming one of the greatest tourist destinations in the world, is my opinion. Stay on track Uribe and Colombia!
