Hotel boom in Bogota

Colombia news - Mariott Bogota

Seventeen new hotels are currently under construction in Bogota, including 'five star' hotels like Hilton, Hyatt and Estelar. The Marriott Hotel opened Monday.

Colombia's capital will be able to add 3220 rooms in five years to the 11,000 available at the moment.

The hotel boom is mostly due to increased tourism and business in Bogota. 23,000 more foreigners visited the country's capital so far in 2009, compared to the same period last year, the Ministry of Foreign Trade reported.

According to the Bogota Chamber of Commerce, Bogota is the sixth best city in Latin America for doing business. 211 foreign and 600 multinational companies were registered in the capital in 2008.

The Chamber also believes that the perception of the improved security situation in Colombia's capital helped to attract more foreigners.

The Marriott International Hotel that opened Monday in Bogota is the first Marriott in Colombia, situated 10 minutes from the city's El Dorado International Airport. The hotel offers 224 rooms and 15 suites.
