Maloka: A fun way of learning in Bogotá

Colombia news - Maloka

Bogotá has many nicknames, but one that might just do the best job defining Colombia's capital city is that of 'Athens of South America' due to the many libraries, schools and universities. But if you want a more accessable way to learn new things, Maloka is a great place to do so.

Maloka consists of two different parts. The interactive center allows visitors to learn about all kinds of science, from the way human beings developed throughout the centuries and the way electricity really works. The other section is a 3D movie theater.

One of the best things about the interactive center is the personal treatment visitors get from devoted staff members, who aim to teach people as much as possible about the topic they specialize in. The center is particularly interesting to children, as there will be enough for them to do and learn. At Maloka, one does not just read or listen, but every section offers all kinds of buttons and other interactive functions to spice up the learning experience.

One section is mostly directed at static electricity. It's enjoyable to watch the human experiments but not so much to be part of them, so stay at a safe distance to avoid being asked to participate, unless you want to have a good indication of what electricity really feels like.

In other parts of the center, you will learn much more about Bogotá's history and geography, which is extremely helpful for those that are new to the city. A large remake of the city, kept under horizontal windows visitors can walk on, offers a good way to learn where the different landmarks are located and how the city is constructed.

The movie theater is in a different part of the building and shows the kind of movies people would expect in a 3D establishment. The universe, the ocean or even a trip to the era of dinosaurs is among the shows on offer.

The Interactive center is opened every day but it is wise to have a look at the official website to see the exact hours, as they are different for some days.

Bogotá's main mass transport system, Transmilenio, currently has no route near Maloka although it is being worked on. To reach the location (Cra 68 D No. 24 A 51) one would be better off taking a taxi or possibly a smaller bus.
