Tanks on the streets of Bogota for Metallica gig

metallica, colombia, concert

The security measures are set to be as heavy as the music when rockers Metallica take to the stage in Bogota's Simon Bolivar park this evening.

Some 1,500 police will be employed to stand guard at the site during Metallica's concert, as well as four tanks and several police trucks, reported El Espectador.

Authorities will also be closing the streets around the park and preventing the entry of under-14s, pregnant women, those under the influence of alcohol or drugs, and those carrying weapons.

The Los Angeles rock behemoths have arrived in the Colombian capital, along with 70 tons of speakers, lights and screens - everything necessary for a spectacular show.

The show will form part of Metallica's world tour to promote their new album "Death Magnetic," and promises to be one of the best shows of the year in Colombia's concert calendar.

Support will come from fellow rockers Mastodon, who in an interview with website Shock, said it was a privilege to perform with the legendary heavy metal band.

Entry to the site for ticket holders will begin at 2 PM - good news for those who have been camping outside the arena since Tuesday.

Other artists set to perform in Colombia in the near future include Aerosmith, Sting and Moby.

Ignorant ethnocentric Beings, such as you KALU, deserve to go to Colombia just for some education, the one people seem to lack in the USA. In Colombia Drugs are not as widely used as in the U.S. Why? because we are not a culture of couch potatoes who pretend to be cool by being drug addicts. Also, the concert took place in Bogota, In Bogota people don't grow drugs, It is a big city with a lot of streets and tall buildings; I guess an ignorant person like you would grow it on a sidewalk. Now about the regions where drugs are cultivated, it is mainly in the jungle in the outskirts, the are grown to be sold mainly to childish wannabies like you and hardly ever reach the Colombian population. I can only feel sorry for the lack of general knowledge and common sense people in the U.S. seem to have.

I'm ignorant, well at least I can see a C! Well, first of all I wouldn't grow pot in a freaking side walk! I'm sure there are some indoor grows in Bogota, unless for some reason Colombians can't get HID's. Don't tell me drugs are not as prevalent as in America, it's the freaking Ayahuasca capital of the world....not Bogota perse but surely Colombia.

I don't think at all that it's just childish wanna be's that grow drugs, that is stupid and unremarkable to claim. I never did drugs to be cool, they are far to dangerous to have that attitude and I've always respected that. The people that have done drugs for that purpose, grew out of that behavior.

It's sure as hell not just 'dirty people' that grow drugs, I knew Tomas Uribe for six weeks at a summer Military school. I didn't talk to him much but I've talked to other Colombians, the rich rich rich kind that have the CIA on speed dial.

Colombia is a very confused company, as far as drugs are concerned. Even in America, you aren't paid much to tend plants and trim. So there are people that make at least 80% of the over all profit, that is where rebels come from.

I've known a hell of a lot more about Colombia than you might think, you'd be surprised how many Colombians travel to America. As far as I have seen from myspace, Colombia has a lot of people that are quite involved in civil drug use.

I don't think it's a shame that Colombia produces a lot of narcotics, I think it's a shame that it's not managed very well! I'm certain that there would be more drugs in Colombia, easier to access than in American shows.....unless it's a hippy festival.

American metal heads don't really peddle openly, well good luck being convinced that Colombia is mostly sober. I'd bet that most people aren't even given a survey and people don't want to deal with the UN heat that comes with a 'epidemic'.
