Wigan Athletic confirm Rodallega deal

English Premiership side Wigan Athletic have confirmed a deal with footballer Hugo Rodallega, who is set to become the first Colombian to play in what might be the world's best league, since the departure of Juan Pablo Ángel in 2007.

Wigan manager Steve Bruce explained that the deal is there, and the only thing that could still get in the way is the paperwork needed for the player to move to England.

"We're close to it but, when you're dealing with someone from abroad, it is already racked with problems," the manager told the Wigan Observer.

"We have to go and apply for a work permit - I believe that has been set for some time next week - and I believe that's on the agenda.

"I don't envisage there will be any problems - I hope not anyway, because he is an exceptional player in South America and will be an exceptional player for us."

The 23-year-old forward - born in El Carmelo, Valle del Cauca - began his career at Deportes Quindio in 2004 and soon moved to Deportivo Cali. In 2006 he left Colombia to join Mexican side Monterrey, and in that country the talented striker also represented Atlas de Guadalajara and Necaxa.

Rodallega also earned 21 caps with the Colombian national team and scored six goals. He was also tournament top scorer at the 2005 South American Sub-20 Championships, having netted no less than 11 times to lead Colombia to the trophy.

Wigan Athletic won promotion to the Premiership in 2005 and finished 10th, 17th and 14th in the three league editions since. At the moment, Wigan occupy the 7th position with 19 of 38 games played.

Should be a decent player..and Wigan isn't one of England's top sides so he should also have a chance to conquer a place in the team's starting line-up. Hopefully he'll do well!
