Noemi Sanin won Sunday's Conservative Party primary and will be the party's presidential candidate in the May 30 election. Opponent Andres Felipe Arias congratulated the former ambassador to the UK.
Sanin beat former agriculture minister Andres Felipe Arias with 30 thousand votes.
The counting of the votes had been surrounded by controversy and led to allegations of fraud by both candidates.
The Conservative Party won 20 Senate seats in the congressional elections held on the same day as the primary and is considered one of the most important candidates to take part in the governing coalition of the next government.

... Is anyone seriously convinced that there will be an election? Santos has basically been declared the new President. |

... Good to hear from you, Andrew. I thought that you had died when you had no comment on the misunderstood US base article. |

... tomtom, I'd rather comment on politics. What else can be said about the bases? Unless the Colombian people ever do anything about it, they are there to stay forever. |

... Not even Santos is sure about his chances, with all the money and support behind him he has a very negative image among the electorate, his move to pick Angelino Garzón as vice president shows that he knows there would be no winner in the first round and that he will be forced to make several alliances for the second round, let's face it, people despise Santos, he's not liked in Bogotá and much less in the rest of the country, but the photo-op of the hostages rescue and the lack of leadership among Uribe's gang has catapulted him to the election. |

... WOW! So many experts this morning...I feel so much safer now. There are two very good reasons why Santos will easily win the Presidency. First, he is qualified to speak on a national and international level with out putting his foot in it all of the time. Second and most important...FARC really hates this guy. If FARC hates him so much there must be an interesting reason...it's called fear! |

... gringomedellin, I agree with you on Santos. He is now the closest link to Uribe's policies among the candidates. progresivo, my theory is that as the election gets closer, expect more "revelations" or tensions with Venezuela to help raise Santos as a nationalist icon who will protect Colombians from the Red Ape (as some right-wing call Chavez) crossing the border. |

... Oblate I disagree Santos is a hot head and it will be a very dangerous and rocky 4 years with him as President............ He does not have the respect on the international stage ,his election might result in the US pulling funding as many see him behind the military human rights violation not Uribe,,,,,,,,,,,,,But in Colombia he is seen as the heir to Uribe...............I think there are better choices for the people of Colombia, not from the Liberal party ,,,,,,,, |
