Colombian senator Piedad Cordoba denounced on Sunday that some of her supporters in the south-west of the country received threats not to vote for her.
In a press release issued by the politician on the day that Colombia elects Congress, she speaks of a "very delicate situation, since it has to do with groups associated with drugs trafficking and paramilitarism".
"This puts at risk the persons that support my work in that region," she said, referring in particular to the departments of Choco and Valle del Cauca.
"These are the regions that are most affected by the threats and the persecutions of persons that come to support the campaign of Piedad Cordoba, which puts at risk the electoral transparency, in a territory that has always shown its support for the senator in previous elections."
The senator claims that those that issue the threats want people to vote for fellow Liberal Party candidate Sigifredo Lopez, who happened to be one of the hostages liberated by the FARC following negotiating from Cordoba.
Cordoba aims to keep her seat in the Colombian senate in Sunday's elections.

... Say whatever you will about her but...no other person in this country has been as effective as she has in getting hostages released. Politically, I can't stand her beliefs. She is always quick to criticize anyone who disagrees with her socialistic views and her admiration of Chavez. Her hatred of Uribe for practically no reason shows her lack of class. Everyone is against her and the people she supposedly represents. In the US she would labeled as a political activist like the people who work for ACORN. Like I said, she is not someone I care for but, she deserves all the accolades she can get because she has does something positive for Colombia unlike the other Senators in the biggest sandbox in Colombia… congress. |

... ...and Córdoba was no less qualified for the Nobel Peace Prize than Barack Obama. At least she did something for the people of Colombia. Obama did nothing for no one. |

... @ oblate she would not have had any success in the hostage release if hse had not been asked to help by Uribe. She has also done more grandstanding during the process then anyone else, and her press release yeasterday is just more of her grandstanding of it is all about me , her only true concern is herslef not others like she would have you believe |

... @ Oblate no one was even ttalking about the USA or Noble Prize not sure why you bring it up....and Córdoba was no less qualified for the Nobel Peace Prize than Barack Obama. At least she did something for the people of Colombia. Obama did nothing for no one. he did do something he gave a voice to millions of voters who felt shut out, he gave a country hope that the BUsh years were behind them that peace might come about. the FARC would have released people with or without her, I don't call someone under investigation for treason as some one worthly of a Noble Prize, Obama was way more deserving then she will ever be. so you think Petro just palys a sandbox................. |

... gringomedellin"the FARC would have released people with or without her,” Maybe but, she was the one who negotiated the release...no one else. She did it. Did she grandstand? Sure but, she got them released. Not one other member of congress did squat...nada, nothing. "I don't call someone under investigation for treason as someone worthy of a Noble Prize, Obama was way more deserving then she will ever be. so you think Petro just plays a sandbox................." Common, grow up. You don't think this wasn't a political stunt? Please! And then tell me one thing...no one tenth of a thing Obama has done in the first 10 months of his Presidency that qualifies him for anything but an open door out of his office. He screwed up the economy, appointed about 20-30 out and out socialists and communists to his Presidential team, caused the reputation of the US to squander throughout Europe and made not effective overture to anyone in Europe or the Middle East. And all Obama could do was bow to a few people. And Petro, this guy is an embarrassment and insult to the nation of Colombia. I hope you don’t think this murdered and extortionist is the next great saint. Petro is a person who should be in jail with the rest of his M-19 friends. Maybe you can get your friends at PBH to buy your silliness but not here. It takes some thought in here. Petro |

... Good for her. Like I said before she is not someone I care for but, she has used the system to her benefit and from what I have heard and read there were no election irregularities. Unlike what is going on with Arias. With this guy you would expect someone is getting paid something somewhere like he did with his Agricultural buddies. That kind of political fraud is starting to go in the toilet anymore. Guys like Arias can't go around promising a job here or a bag of cement there and expect to get elected. They have to mean something and stand up for some kind of values. It is the media that is driving this debate and doing a pretty good job as well. And just because you lost the election you can't go around saying someone is guilty of treason or is a paramilitary or other such garbage. People see through that stuff and they laugh at the poor souls who use this kind of divisiveness to state their case. In the end, it makes them sound so immature. |
