An indigenous burial ground dating from over 8,000 years ago has been discovered at the building site of a new airport in the central Colombian department of Caldas, reported El Tiempo on Friday.
Since work began six years ago on the new airport, which is located close to the municipality of Palestina, archeologists have been called to investigate a total of 128 point of interest.
So far more than 600 historical artifacts have been unearthed from the site, the majority of which were found in good condition.
One of the most significant finds was a tomb thought to have belonged to pre-Hispanic civilizations which occupied the region located just north of the airport's new runway.
Other items of historical interest include pottery, bones and and arrow heads used for hunting by the ancient community.
Authorities have decided to construct a museum in the area to display the finds.
