Obama praises Uribe's acceptance of referendum defeat

obama, uribe

U.S. President Barack Obama Wednesday sent a letter to Colombian President Alvaro Uribe, commending the U.S. ally for his graceful acceptance of the Colombian Constitutional Court's rejection of a referendum that would have allowed Uribe to pursue a third term in power.

In the letter, Obama applauded Uribe for providing "an invaluable example to all citizens, including presidents, in the acceptance of the law and the acceptance of the decisions of democratic institutions."

The letter was delivered to Uribe in a meeting with Obama's National Security Advisor James Jones in Chile, El Tiempo reported Thursday.

Following the delivery of the letter, Jones congratulated the people of Colombia for the country's "democratic stability."

Uribe sought to run for a third term as president, which is prohibited under the Colombian constitution. The Constitutional Court studied the referendum bill proposing that Uribe be allowed to run for his second re-election and found it to be unconstitutional.

Well that's a mature comment!
Regardless of weather you like it or not the USA is a hugely important partner to Colombia for both bad and good reasons and that Colombia is seen as being more democratic than many of its neighbours can only be a good thing for the future. Coming from a country, the UK, that does not have a written constitution I look in envy on countries such as Colombia and the USA that do have such template for governance.

What a travesty , in every normal western country when the head of the secret service commits extra judicial killings. Erases the names of paramillitair narcotrafficantes with their crimes from the computers of the DAS intelligence. That President got to go. Even if there was a slightest hint, any President of any western country would have stepped dow

To see Obama congratulating him he gives a sort of ok to the whole saga involving JORGE AURELIO NOGUERA COTES, former head of the DAS.
This silent condoning is Obama unworthy and is a slap into the face of democracy

apracino, what a clumsy comment you made. It shows your lack of intelligence and total haltered for Uribe and a Democratic political system. "Even if there was a slightest hint, any President of any western country would have stepped dow." After you learn how to spell the English language please name one country or one President that this has happened to…EVER! People like Uribe, Correa, or Chavez will do everything possible to stay in office. For Uribe to accept the court’s decision shows his class, the confidence of his party and the confidence of the country he serves.

Take your probable mentor Hugo (I live for democracy) Chavez for example. I am sure he would stand down if this were too happened to him. Yeah, in a pigs butt he would!

Colombia wouldn't be so rich in places if it wasn't for Gringo's, a lot of money that started businesses, went to peoples private education, and formed relationships came from the rich history of narcotics. Maybe people associate cocaine with big hair bands and crack way to much. It used to be very trendy among intellectuals and other fancy people, mostly in Italy!
