Cartagena to increase security spending

cartagena

Cartagena will invest $6 million in its police force in an effort to increase security in the Colombian coastal city.

The money will be spent on six new police vehicles, and on increasing the police presence on the streets, El Universal reported Tuesday.

The announcement of the new measures follow a security summit held in Cartagena last Friday.

Minister for the Interior Sindis Meza said the summit "helped to identify the needs, obstacles and solutions related to crime in the principal cities of the country".

Cartagena's increased security measures follow the dispatch of 270 extra police officers sent to city in mid January to help combat a wave of violence that hit Colombia's most important tourist hotspot in the first weeks of the new year.
